How to choose your Pre-A Level summer school – 8 top tips
Summer camps are invariably life-changing experiences for those who are fortunate enough to attend and there is nothing better than a Pre A Level Summer School to give serious students a head start whether it be for their exams or in readiness for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. In this article, our Head of Communications, Caroline Marshall looks at how to choose the right school.
There are many different types of summer camps for various needs and desires with something for everyone. Options include Academic Camps, Sports Camps, English Camps, German Camps, French Camps, Adventure Camps, Computer Camps, STEM Camps, and Medicine Camps. And of course, many parents are looking for a Pre A Level Summer School to equip their children in preparation for their exams or in getting used to the British education system before they start boarding.
In my experience summer camps work best when students have the opportunity to engage with subjects aligned with their interests. I.e. it’s not just about learning English, but developing language skills around the topics you love. At Academic Summer we achieve this by embracing Content and Language Learning (CLIL).
Over and above this they are looking for a place where their children can connect with like-minded peers, prepare for the world, improve their English, and boost their confidence. So, where do YOU begin to choose the right Pre A Level Summer Camp?
The Pre A Level Summer Camp for you
Sending your child to the right Pre A Level summer camp is one of the best investments you can make for their future, but it's a big decision with many factors to consider. If you get it right, it could be the best two weeks of their lives. If you get it wrong, you could be in for two weeks of heartbreak and stress. So, what can you do to ensure that you get it right the first time?
Follow these eight simple steps to assist you in making the best decision for your child
1. Education consultants and agents are your friends
They’ve done all the legwork so you don’t have to. The best agents have spent years in the industry, sent countless children to holiday camps, visited the camps, and have a great overview of what’s available. They will get to know your child and provide tailored advice to assist you in making the best decision. They can also help with travel arrangements, visa requirements, and make your life easier in general. Best of all, if any issues arise, they will represent you and assist in resolving them.
2. Check for group travel options with a group leader
This is an excellent choice for first-time campers. Traveling with a group leader ensures there is always someone on the ground who speaks your child's language.
3. Attend education fairs when they are held in your city
Quite often, the person at the fair will also be the person at the camp, allowing you to make contact and feel confident that your child is in good hands. You'll also have the opportunity to meet with a variety of schools, learn new things, and make an informed decision about which camp is best for your child.
4. Questions to ask before making a decision
- What is the nationality breakdown in the camp? The best camps will have a nationality cap of around 20% and a diverse range of nationalities. Imagine the friends your child is going to make!
- Inquire about student to staff ratios. The best schools will have small class sizes and a good staff-to-student ratio on trips. For example, Academic Summer has a maximum class size of 15 and a trip ratio of 10-1.
- Ask about the number of hours of study. Some camps provide 25-30 hours of study time, while others may offer less. Determine what aligns with your child's needs. In a Pre A Level summer camp 40 hours is most beneficial. We offer your child a place where they can be revise what they have learnt for their A Levels or to ensure they are IB ready.
- Find out about the trip schedule. Some camps plan educational trips, while others may take a more relaxed approach. Decide what suits your child best.
Ask about the daily routine. Most schools usually have this planned in advance.
5. Book early
The best things don’t always come to those who wait. Booking before the winter break can often secure an early bird discount.
6. Safety is every school’s number one priority
Child welfare in the UK is extremely strict, and camps are thoroughly vetted. Look for organisations accredited by BAC, OFSTED, or ISI to ensure your child is in safe hands.
7. Give them a chance to settle in – be strong!
It's difficult for everyone at first, especially knowing your child is far from home and feeling unsettled. This is completely normal. Encourage them to participate and give them time to adjust. If concerns arise, discuss them with the adults, agent, group leader, or school to ensure your child has an unforgettable experience.
8. Recognise that the food isn’t bad – It’s just different!
Many camps take pride in serving delicious, healthy, home-cooked food. If they complain about the food, it's a sign they're generally happy with everything else.
Should you choose Academic Summer, you have nothing to worry about. We have run camps for over 10 years with more than 1,000 students joining us every year.
